New Orleans Saints vs. Indianapolis Colts: Shockey, Peyton Manning, Super Bowl

On Jeremy Shockey's Twitter page on Tuesday, the hobbled tight end revealed an interesting piece of information.

"Damn just got back from b'ham," wrote Shockey, referring to Birmingham, which is where Dr. James Andrews a world-renowned orthopedic surgeon, is headquartered. "I missed our team diner...Gnight everyone.."

Shockey didn't say what he did during his "long ass day."

Shockey has been slowed in recent games by knee and toe injuries.

"I felt like a pogo stick out there on one leg," said Shockey, but I have no doubt in my mind it'll be better in two weeks.. It's probably a three- or four-week injury, but there's no way I'm going to miss the Super Bowl. There's no way I'm going to miss the next one either."

When he was with the Giants, Shockey missed their Super Bowl because he was recovering from a broken leg. He doesn't want to watch another Super Bowl from a press box.

The Saints will try to rough up Peyton Manning like they did Brett Favre last week. But the Colts provide good protection.

CBS analyst Shannon Sharper, a former star tight end for Denver, said Manning operates out of an eight-by-ten box, and ten feet deep.

"If you can get him out of there, you can cause them some problems. If you can't...you saw the Jets. The Jets early on had success getting him to move. But (Peyton) and his offensive coordinator (Tom Moore), they went back to the sidelines and looked at what they were doing. They said, 'We can pick this up,' and they did. You've got to get him out of the box."

Manning isn't known for his running skills. Early in his career, he joked about his lack of sped, "the ref wanted to penalize me 15 yards for delay of game."

The Saints hit Favre 16 times after or as he was releasing passes. On one hit, he thought his teeth had been knocked out.

The Colts are pretty much a one-dimensional team that follows the pass, but opponents can't entirely go to sleep on their running game, which finished the season as the NFL's worst.  Joseph Addai, former LSU standout, rushed for 80 yards on 16 carries against the Jets and Donald Brown is a capable runner. The Saints finished 21st against the run.

The Saints' game plan will be to control the ball and keep Manning off the field. They'll need their offense to return to its early-season form.

The Saints defeated the Vikings in the NFC championship game, but the five turnovers they forced is a big reason why.  Otherwise, the Vikings dominated in yardage (475 to 257), first downs (31 to 15), and time of possession (36.49 to 27:56).

If that disparity resurfaces in the Super Bowl, with Manning who protects the ball very well, the Saints don't have a chance.

TWO GAME PLANS?: The offensive coaches at the Senior Bowl in Mobile are talking about the manner in which the Colts' Peyton Manning dismantled the Jets and their coach Rex Ryan, who is supposed to have the best defensive mind in the NFL.

The coaches believe that the Saints should have two game separate plans for Manning. One for the first half and one for the second half. There is concern, however, because the Saints players would interpret the unconventional approach as panic.

Still, because of the way Manning is playing, panic might be the right response.

MAYORS BET: As it's a Super Bowl Bowl custom, New Orleans and Indianapolis mayors have made their wagers for the game.

New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin will put compact discs of New Orleans-based musicians.  Mardi Gras king cakes and other local foods in his package that'll go to Indy if the Colts win.

Indy mayor Greg Ballard will ship shrimp cocktail with plenty of horseradish from a restaurant to Nagin if the Saints win.

A poll of Colts fans showed they preferred sending Nagin a fully dressed Mug-N-Bug tenderloin, onion rings and root beer. Another suggestion was one year of free food Yats Cajun Creole Restaurant.

SENIOR BOWL: Saints director of college scouting Rick Reiprish is in Mobile after celebrating the NFC championship victory. Reiprish and the scouting department many congratulations, handshakes and pats on the back

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was among those offering good wishes to the Saints. "That championship was well deserved," said the Dallas owner. "The team consistently played well when it counted, and Sean Payton, former Dallas asssitant, did a great job getting his team ready for a game like that.."

Former Saints coach Jim Haslett said, "It was a well deserve win for the city and the players, who last week was named defensive coordinator of the Redskins. "The city loves its team"

Ex Saints safety Sammy Knight said the Saints' victory made him feel close to be a part of the team. "I was worried at the end, because I thought the Vikings would win," said Knight."A loss would have devastated the city, but I thought the team would come back in the game because they progressively have gotten better. The best team win."
