Saints All-Pro safety Darren Sharper said he hoped the talks his agent had with the Giants would lead to a nice contract, but they signed Antrel Rolle for $15 million instead.
"We were hoping the talks we had with the Giants would workout, but they signed the younger guy, Antrel Rolle, for $15 million," said Sharper per Fanhouse.com. "Now it's matter of finding a place where the dollars make sense.
"An all-pro safety nowadays makes $6 million a year. I think I can play three more years."
The Saints paid Sharper $1.7 million last season and refused to put a $6.5 million franchise tag on him this season. If Sharper, 34, 14-year veteran, returns to the Saints it will be for dollars somewhere closer to his salary last season, more than the lofty dollars the franchise tag would have brought him.
The possibility of larger dollars and a longer-term deal in a new place remains his hope.
Last Wednesday, he underwent surgery "to get a little clean-up." I was dealing with the knee a lot at the end of the season," said Sharper. "I hope to get out and visit teams that are interested in me soon. The ones that are interested, know about the knee. It has just delayed things some, but there's no rush.”
Sharper said he would be a good fit for the Jets and the Bears.
Linebacker Scott Fujita, an unrestricted free agent like Sharper, signed with the Cleveland Browns on Sunday for a $14 million for three years, $8 million guaranteed. He said leaving the Saints won't lessen his enthusiasm for the recently released Saints highlights video.
"No matter what color I'm wearing, I'm always going to have great memories from this past season, and all those experiences not just of the 2009 seasons, but everything from the last four years. Those are things we will carry forever."
LITTLE, HALL TO VISIT: Former Rams defensive ends Leonard Little and James Hall will visit the Saints this week.
Hall, a 13-year veteran made a splash in 2004 with 11.5 sacks, but never managed more than 6.5 after that season.
The Saints cut Charles Grant last week, putting them in play for another body there. It appears that the Saints may be picking up scrapes from a team that has won six games in three years.
At the NFL Combine, Saints coach Sean Payton finagled an expensive bottle of wine at an Indianapolis restaurant the night before the Cowboys could gather to enjoy it. Todd Wright of Sporting News radio had one of the waitresses from St.Elmoe's on his show recently. She confirmed the incident, and added more details. She said that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had not expressly reserved the last bottle of the wine in question, but the staff knew from past experience that the wine was one that Jones liked. When Payton ordered the wine, he wasn't told that Jones and the Cowboys' entourage was coming to the restaurant the next night, or that Jones may have wanted that wine. Payton later learned of Jones' likely interest in the wine, and then Payton decided to autograph the label and leave the bottle for Jones. However, the bottle won't be headed to the Hall of Fame any time soon, after it was left for the Cowboys, someone knocked the bottle over and broke it....
SAINTS RE-SIGN TORRENCE: The Saints have re-signed another of their many restricted free agents. Cornerback Leigh Torrance signed a one-year deal. He appeared in five games last season and was inactive in five others before landing on injured reserve because of a shoulder injury....
