The City of New Orleans is following through with an ill-advised plan to increase the cost of parking at meters by 20 percent to $1.50 per hour and extend the hours of operation to 6 p..m. on Saturday. Already, parking in New Orleans is a circus as motorists face the choice of parking in exorbitant garages or trying their luck on the streets. In many cases the parking meters are broken or covered for a special event or movie shoot.
The scarcity and dependability of the meters is a real problem; however, the Nagin administration does not care. They just see dollar signs and a way to drive more revenue to City Hall.. The parking meter contract allows an out-of-state company to derive a large percentage of the ticket revenue and the meter maids are given incentives to write as many tickets as possible. These meter maids are ruthless and have no interest in being kind with unsuspecting motorists. Their conduct after the massive Saints parade was atrocious as thousands of tickets were issued to fans trying to watch history in the making. It left many people with a bad taste about visiting New Orleans.
In the Nagin administration there are no economic development plans of any significance. Instead, there are only schemes to try to extract as much money as possible from locals and tourists visiting New Orleans. Their insidious plan is to install more parking meters, extend their hours and raise the cost of parking in New Orleans. In the short term, it may bring in more revenue to City Hall, but it will be at tremendous cost in the long term. This plan will just encourage more shoppers and locals to visit malls and restaurants in Jefferson Parish, where parking is plentiful and free.
The change will be another challenge for motorists trying to navigate and park in the French Quarter. Civic activist Margarita Bergen is very “upset” and claims that the only beneficiaries will be the parking garages, which will increase their rates. According to Bergen, “people just do not want to come to the French Quarter. Sometimes, I get a ticket just from going from the meter machine to my car. Most of the machines do not work, so I need to find one that works and by the time I get to the car, I get a ticket.” Bergen’s story is a very familiar and typical of the reaction from many locals. The new plan will only spur more public outrage.
Fortunately, Mayor-elect Mitch Landrieu will review this plan when he takes office in May. According to Landrieu, “we’re going to review every decision that’s been made, especially those that have been made in the last 90 days.” Landrieu said the he likes the idea of free parking on Saturday, but “it’s something that we will analyze when we get there.”
This new policy is a scam that will backfire as more people will be discouraged from visiting, shopping and dining in New Orleans. The idea is shortsighted and based on the desperate need to increase revenue for the city, which is facing a severe budget deficit. One tourist official privately admitted that the parking meter extension could hurt already struggling French Quarter businesses. Margarita Bergen calls the idea a blatant “rip-off.”
Landrieu would create tremendous goodwill by rescinding the idea and encouraging people to visit New Orleans and spend their money with local merchants.
It is time that city leaders placed the interests of the people over the needs of the City Hall bureaucracy. If the parking meter extension proposal was placed before the voters of New Orleans it would lose overwhelmingly. More public servants need to follow the will of the people instead of trying to force their will on the people.
Mayor-elect Landrieu should rescind this policy and make it the first of many Nagin era policies that he is reversing. It would kickoff his administration in the right way, create plenty of good feelings toward the new Mayor and bolster his honeymoon period, something every new Mayor desires, but not every Mayor receives.

All is not lost. Both success and failure serve useful purposes. New Orleans is a "government dependent" (in so many different ways) city. It is not dependent upon self sufficient citizens engaging in the free market, instead .. it expects to "prosper" due to government (governemnt jobs, hospitals, businesses bribed into coming here, securing funds from D.C. or baton Rouge, etc., etc.). BWA-HA-HA-HA. Poor stupid b@$tards. Ah well, if someone wants to study "what not to do" .. there's always New Orleans, or Detroit, or an other "Democratic Bastion" that one can study. New Orleans business owners ... move out of Orleans Parish before its too late. I'll keep trying to convince the wife to sell her home in Gentilly. It's a nice neighborhood, except for the occasional shooting that is; oh well, we DO have plenty of parking out this way though.... Written by kpf, this city needs change, Landrieu ain't it

Such a delusional crowd… Searching, searching, searching, asking, asking, asking, expecting, expecting, expecting…… and the answers are right in front of your noses… Oh sure, a few suggestions here, and a few there, sort of like idle gossip on a subway between two strangers commuting to and from the Beg Easy (ooops, I forgot, it is the Big Apple that has a subway system, forgive me, I’m not worthy! I’m not worthy!)…. But in the end, everyone’s little sphincters are cinched tight at the thought of really doing anything with a common sense approach. And why? Ehhh, jealousy? Greed?, Sefishness? Who knows, Oh well - - - - - The Superdome has a listed football seating capacity of 72,968 (expanded) or 69,703 (not expanded), a maximum basketball seating capacity of 55,675, and a maximum baseball capacity of 63,525; however, published attendance figures from events such as the Sugar Bowl football game have exceeded 85,000. A 1980s Rolling Stones concert attracted more than 87,500 spectators. SOOOOO….. HOW DOES THE CITY FIGURE OUT HOW TO PAY THAT BILL, AS WELL AS IT’S NORMAL OPERATING COSTS? SIMPLE, BY CONTINUING TO STAB LITTLE FISH FOR THE FEED MUCH LIKE THE EGRET IN THE SWAMP DOES WITH ITS POINTY SHARP BILL… OR YOU CAN CONTINUE ON IN YOUR CAREFULLY CONTROLLED CITY/STATE PANIC MODE WHICH YOU ARE BEING CONDITIONED TO LABOR UNDER…… Parking garages, really an inexpensive proposition, but you have to know who to go to that knows how to bring costs down… And the trolly lines for 4 + sumthing sum millions? I agree with you, Jeff, about the parking meters. I also don't think goofy Nagin is considering the increased costs to monitor the meters, thru the meter maids. Millions are wasted in the garbage pickup contracts and he thinks he's doing great bringing in a measely $1 million, and i don't hink it will happen. Written by Buddy B.

This is just another example of RayNay's pettiness. Or, there are two other possibilities: 1. that he gets a kickback from the out of state parking contractor (very likely) and, 2. that he's just out to ruin the city and make life difficult for our new mayor elect, It's a shame that his buddy Greg is under indictment or he could take him to Hawaii or the Carribean (or anywhere) until his term expires New Orleans will be so nice when the stink of this rotten scoundrel i gone. There's two sides to this coin. Some businesses have limited parking and need meters to keep someone from taking up that space all day. The other side is New Orleans shops must compete with Jefferson Parish, where there are no parking meters. I only go to downtown and pay for parking if there is something unique I wish to see/buy (Le Petite Theatre, buying a painting, or antique shop browsing, festivals, etc.). What New Orleans needs (particularly Magazine St.) is parking. Until free, readily available parking is provided, many shoppers will stay away from downtown. Written by Percival Spaulding

AMEN again! I've had plenty to say on this issue, myself, and I agree with you on this one. New Orleans already has a bad reputation among tourists for this parking situation and these new burdens only make it worse. Mitch needs to rescind these new Nagin rip-offs and take a long, hard look at this entire parking issue in the city, especially in the CBD and the Quarter. It's a horrendous mess! What is the big deal about meters on Saturday. It should help store owners because it will provide short term parking close to their store. If you plan on spending the entire day you should be parked in a lot.
Right now if you want to go by something quick on a saturday in the quarter the chances of finding a parking spot on the street are very slim. Hopefully people will be able to find a parking spot go into the store or Restaurant they are going to, and only have to pay a few dollars for parking. Right now you are forced into an expensive lot that cost over $5 for an hour of parking.

I am of mixed feeling on this topic:
New Orleans is a tourist destination and the city government should engage in revenue generating activities that leave a pleasant taste in the mouths of our visitors. Since it would benefit everyone in the city, I see no reason why New Orleans shouldn't invest in more city owned parking garages downtown. Additionally, the city might consider having leniency on special holidays like the Saints' Victory Parade.
I can, however, appreciate the situation the city is in. This vast majority of tax payers in the greater New Orleans area don't live in the city of New Orleans. The flight of taxpayers and businesses out of the city, compounded by the large, remaining non tax-paying population means the city has very little revenue. Further, many of the "tax payers" who don't live in the city commute to the city for work thereby consuming city resources (i.e. roads, street cleaning services, etc) without paying for them. Collecting more money in the form of parking tickets is a quick fix.
The real problem here is the lack of corporate & small business investment in the city. With investment comes more tax revenues, better paying jobs, and less crime. If our mayor-elect has half a brain, he'll make economic development his #1 priority and getting rid of all those meter maids his #2. Written by twick
