Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

We’re one month away from qualifying but the election fireworks have already started:

Last night, New Orleans Mayoral candidate James Perry took a swipe at John Georges’s and Edwin Murray’s campaign financing disclosures.

In an email, Perry said:

Dear Friend,

Today the people of New Orleans got their first glimpse of what they can expect of a Mayor from the current field of candidates.

Two candidates from the "Politics As Usual" crowd played fast and loose with campaign ethics laws on their most recent reports with one not disclosing thousands upon thousands of dollars in expenditures and another by apparently receiving thousands in campaign cash from lobbyists in Baton Rouge who represent clients who come before him on the Insurance commission and judiciary committee.

One campaign had an average contribution of over $2,700, another almost $2,600.

Does that sound like an average donation from an average New Orleanian or does it sound like the status quo investing in candidates who they can count on to continue to put politics above progress?

The contrast simply could not be clearer between our campaign and those of our opponents. It's one of the primary reasons why I decided to run for Mayor.

We simply can't afford the same old "politics as usual" Help us send a message to the same old "politics as usual" crowd who believe the rules don't apply to them because of who or what they are by donating $25, $50, $100 or $250 right now.

We need a Mayor that leads by example, not exception, if we are to bring about real change at City Hall. If not, the next four years are going to look a lot like the last four years.”

Yesterday, Bayoubuzz published the campaign disclosure information of John Georges, Rob Couhig and Edwin Murray.

In reference to Perry’s email, John Georges emailed me today stating, "We have a CPA firm to assure reporting requirements are met. I have confidence that they know the rules bettor.  If something it not on this report then you must assume it will be on the next report due to 'cut-offs'.”

Edwin Murray’s campaign had “no comment”.

James Perry’s campaign has told me that he is reporting for this period 887 donations, raising $89,565.63.  The total raised to date is $128,655.41 and the cash on hand is $64,943.54.  His expenditures for the reporting period was $31,107.85 and prior to this period, he had $6,485.76 in hand.   According to James Perry’s office, his report was filed timely and is currently being scanned by the Ethics Board since it is so voluminous.

Other Election News:

Rep. Louisiana Rep Walt Legier said on Facebook:  “Close to 200 people came out to Tipitina's last night for the event”.  Legier held a fundraiser.

Virginia Blanque will be running for District A Councilwoman in New Orleans.  She is a Republican, a small business owner, a former financial planner and community activist.

Tobacco and Music

Earlier this year, I complained about attempting to attend a famous music hall in New Orleans “Tipitina’s” and found it so smoky that I could not breathe.   I had also attempted to go to other music venues in the Bywater area and found smoke-mixed-music environment.

Today, I received the following, which I feel is a breath of fresh air.  It is from the Louisiana Public Health Institute.

“As you may know, we’ve been working to provide and support smoke-free shows around the New Orleans area.  After a successful turn during Jazzfest, where we sponsored over 40 smoke-free shows through Backbeat Foundation, we are now doing smoke-free music series throughout the year to continue to provide smoke-free environments for musicians, bartenders and nightlife lovers around town.  We’ve been working to build and show support of our efforts for smoke-free air, and Phonograph Films filmed at a couple of shows to ask people what they thought about smoke-free air.  You can check out these videos on our new You Tube channel:  www.youtube.com/LetsBeTotallyClearLA

Big Sam Funky’s Nation, Shamarr Allen and the Underdawgs, DJ Brice Nice, bartenders, sound engineers, and a variety of people from the crowd shared their thoughts about smoke-free environments.  You can also share your feelings about smoke-free environments on our website:  www.LetsBeTotallyClear.org  On this site you are able to do a variety of different things, so play around on it when you get the chance.  You can also friend us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter @BeTotallyClear to get the latest news about smoke-free shows and happenings in Louisiana.”

I am glad that others are sensitive to creating more smoke-free music..

US Senate Race
Senator David Vitter posted on his Facebook page this statement and video that attempts to link Charlie Melancon to President Obama which is Senator Vitter's strategy:

"Obama can’t pass his liberal agenda without devoted foot soldiers. Check out one of my recent web ads, “Teamwork,” about the Obama-Melancon team. "

However, in Senator Vitter's post, he again failed to mention as he did yesterday in a similar post that Melancon voted against the House healthcare bill on Saturday which was supported by President Obama.

On another note, David Vitter, Tony Gentile might have some competition.  Guess who?  None other than Stormy Daniels.  Remember her?  She recently  gave an interview in  Marie Claire which in part gives an idea of her ambitions and perhaps her motivations.  Will she play a factor?  She probably take some votes from the other candidates, but would bring levity, publicity and even some scorn into the race.  Already the interview has been picked up by significant publications including the New York Magazine.  Here are just a few inserts from the New York magazine article that quoted Marie Claire.  By the way, Marie Claire is a publication that focuses upon porn-related matters:

Q: How much will your résumé be a factor?

A: It's actually starting to work in my favor — I have nothing to hide. A sex tape of me isn't going to pop up and shame me; there are 150 of them at the video store.

Q: Do you think you're more qualified than Senator Vitter?

A: Absolutely not. But in one movie, I did play a Secret Service agent marooned on an island controlled by North Korea. I butt heads with dictator Kim Jong-il and come out on top.

Q: If you're elected, will you quit porn?

A: Probably, but only because of HD...and gravity.

Carrie Prejean Angrily Takes Off Microphone In Middle Of Larry King Interview
BY Alan Colmes

On Larry King Live Wednesday night, dismissed beauty queen Carrie Prejean got quite upset when King asked why she agreed to settle with the Miss USA Pageant rather than continue her lawsuit.  He was clear that he wasn’t asking the terms of the settlement, just what motivated her choice. Prejean blasted King for being “inappropriate,” and when King moved on and took a phone call she removed her microphone.

Lou Dobbs

The NY Times said today about Lou Dobbs in a article about his quitting CNN,” Over the years Mr. Dobbs evolved from being a sober business anchor to a commentator who labeled himself “Mr. Independent.” The issues at the top of his agenda — ones that he mentioned again on Wednesday in explaining his departure — include immigration policy, the growth of the country’s middle class, climate change, and the military involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq. He had saved his most ideological remarks for his afternoon radio show, which made its debut in March 2008. It is on the radio show that he talked repeatedly about the conspiracy theory claims that President Obama is not a United States citizen. When he mentioned the citizenship issue on CNN over the summer, he raised the ire of his bosses and provoked criticism from progressive groups.”  What do you think about Lou Dobbs quitting?  Do you think he was fair?

Carrie Prejean??? Who is she and why should I care? Please don't bother to answer, I don't really want to know, nor would I care. (I will admit I did get a bit excited seeing Valerie Bertinelli's bod clad only in a bikini though, ha-chee-wa-wa mama).

The least Vitter's people could do is make sure they hire a voice that can pronounce Melancon the right way.
