New Orleans Roadfood Festival

The second annual New Orleans Roadfood Festival kicks off Friday, March 26, with an Opening Night Party at the historic Boucvalt House, where Jane and Michael Stern will bestow Roadfood.com’s inaugural Roadfood Blue Plate Award on Anthony and Gail Uglesich.

At Friday night’s party, regional specialties from across America will be served, including Alabama barbecue, all-you-can-eat shrimp and oysters, Cajun cracklins, freshly-made pralines, and an open bar. Tickets for the party are $75 and can be purchased by calling    504-293-2657  504-293-2657   504-293-2657   504-293-2657 or through the Festival website.

The street festival opens Saturday, March 27, at 11 a.m., when Royal Street becomes a food-lover’s paradise with two dozen vendors serving sample-sized regional specialties from Louisiana and across the country.  Vendors scheduled to participate include: Lasyone’s Meat Pie Restaurant from Natchitoches, Plum Street Snoballs, Vaucresson Sausage Company, Uglesich’s, Prejean’s Restaurant, Tony Luke’s – famous for their Philly cheese steaks, the Maine Diner, and Royer’s Round Top from Texas. The festival runs on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 28, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Also on Saturday, March 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Festival’s sister event, the Louisiana Oyster Jubilee, now in its fourth successful year, takes place on the 300 block of Bourbon Street.  The Jubilee’s showcase event is the assembling and eating of the Longest Oyster Po’Boy. Built in concert by over twenty New Orleans restaurants with 5,500 locally-harvested oysters, the po’boy sprawls across 340 feet of Bourbon Street. After the ceremonial cutting, the po’boy will be distributed to oyster lovers and devoured in minutes, to the accompanying music of the Storyville Stompers Brass Band.

On Saturday evening, ticket-holders will enjoy the Cochon de Lait and Cajun Crawfish Boil at the Bayou Barn, with local music, unlimited beer and wine, and Tarot card readings by Jane Stern.  Tickets are $95, which includes the cost of round-trip bus transportation from the French Quarter, and can be purchased by calling  504-293-2657  504-293-2657 or visiting the Festival website.

The first-ever Café Beignet Eating Contest is Sunday, March 28, at noon in front of Café Beignet, 334-B Royal Street.  Competitors will be five of New Orleans Police Department’s finest, and five of the bravest New Orleans Firemen.  The eaters will compete to see who can consume the most beignets in three minutes.  Emceeing the event will be recording artist, actor and restaurateur Tony Luke, Jr. of Tony Luke’s Old Philly Style Sandwiches in Philadelphia. Prizes for the very full winners will be provided by Café Beignet, New Orleans Steamboat Company, and Grayline Tours.

Admission to the street festival is free; proceeds from food and beverage sales go to participating restaurants, including Cafe Reconcile, which provides at-risk kids the opportunity to learn the food service business.

The Festival is sponsored by The Louisiana Culinary Trails, Sheraton Hotels and Resorts, and WWNO.  Roadfood.com is the online home of best-selling authors Jane and Michael Stern, whose book Roadfood started the cult of celebrating great American roadside eats over 30 years ago.
