Due to the conflict between LSU and Tulane, the Jindal Administration through the Division of Administration has sent out this release. Tulane signed the proposed MOU on Friday and LSU refused to sign it citing that it was taking the risk without sufficient benefit. Meanwhile, some are complaining that the New Orleans indigent and non-insured population continues to suffer due to the lack of medical care. Others complain that the lack of an institution is stiffling economic growth in New Orleans:
BATON ROUGE –Commissioner of Administration Angele Davis today announced the suspension of land acquisition activities for the proposed new University Medical Center in New Orleans, pending a resolution of the MOU concerning the governance structure for the proposed medical center. The governance structure is a critical step toward developing a financing model for the new facility.
Commissioner Davis said, “There remains no agreement on the proposed governing structure and it is critical that we make an intensified effort to reach an agreement before the state acts to purchase the property. The proposed agreement called for a non-profit corporation to operate the hospital, with the corporation being responsible for obtaining debt financing. Without this corporation, or an agreement by the stakeholders to form the corporation, financing the project becomes a bigger challenge.
“This will have no impact on the VA Hospital and the on-going land acquisition activities for the new VA Hospital in New Orleans. Today, we are suspending land acquisition activities and efforts for the MCLNO / Charity replacement hospital pending a resolution of the governance issue.”
Commissioner Davis reached this conclusion after consulting with DHH Secretary Alan Levine. Both are in agreement on the urgency of reaching a conclusion on the governance structure so land acquisition activities can continue and this important project can move forward.
Turn the present buildings of Charity over to Tulane - Huey will turn over in his grave. Let Tulane renovate the buildings and begin the rejuvenation of health care in New Orleans. Let Tulane call in the best of the best to teach, to practice, and to do research. Yes, let's use some of that money Tulane. In the four years it will take for LSU to build its new hospital, Tulane will be far advanced. Now Tulane take control and let LSU flounder in it desire for control. After all, dears, Paul Tulane's Act of Donation ultimately resulted in the renaming Tulane University of Louisiana, formerly the University of Louisiana (founded as the Medical College of Louisiana), in his honor and turning the once public institution into a private one. Let history repeat itself. At the same time bring Newcomb into the picture and use some of that money also. Newcomb School of Medicine and Tulane Hospital of New Orleans. Byem bye LSU. Tulane seems to have acted hororably and to protect the rights of the trainee doctors who will help staff the new hospital. LSU seems to be continuing to drag their feet, and this time round it seems that their leaders are interested more in control than in providing quality health care for the people of Louisana, and especially of New Orleans.
